Extract from the memoirs of Oswald Hargreaves

It was Christmas Eve, 1983. We were all gathered at Izzy’s house in the Forest of Bowland. A beautiful place in Lancashire, where we’d spent many days picnicking by the river Hodder.  Me, Izzy and the twins were gathered round the TV while we all chatted about the Christmas Specials. I was distracted. I was keen for my love, Primrose, to join us. She’d be wearing her favourite blue dress, the one that really brought out her bright eyes. Her train was due in soon.

“Don’t forget to pick your Mum up Izzy. Her train arrives at 8pm.”

“What do you mean Dad? exclaimed Izzy. “Dad?” 

“Your Mum, Izzy. Pick her up.”

“Oh Dad” she said softly, to avoid the twins over hearing. Izzy leaned over to put her arm around me. 

“That train left the station a long time ago Oswald. And Mum is no longer on it. Remember?” 

“What?” I asked, somewhat baffled. “I don’t understand. I mean, why?” Izzy said nothing, just held my hand and squeezed until I started to recall. 

“My dear Primrose” I said, as one of Izzy’s tears found its way onto her blouse. For much of the time lately, I had expected her to step off the train on any given day. That day was the first time I’d admitted to myself, that she wasn’t. So, before all my memories became part of a blurry tangled mess, I was compelled to put my life down in words. 

So here I am. And here goes…
